Fine art school portraits... Re-defining the typical yearbook photo.

I'm re-envisioned what a school portrait has to look like, and am bringing my relaxed portraiture and fine art approach to capture timeless, unique portraits of your child no matter their age. I am excited to have the opportunity to offer your school an alternative to traditional studio school portraits. I provide a personal, boutique experience to all the families who attend the schools who have chosen me to photograph their children, and my portraits offer a true window into the heart of each child.

What is a fine art school portrait?

Fine Art School Portraits are a modern approach to school photos. No more cheesy smiles with strange backgrounds. The background will be black and the photos will be simple and classic using natural window light. Instead of forcing a cheesy grin, the children will be encouraged to be themselves and will never be forced to smile. By interacting with them for a few minutes I work hard to elicit a natural and authentic facial expression. My goal in fine art school photography is to provide families with a more authentic and beautiful portrait of their child than a traditional 30-seconds sit and smile on a backdrop can offer.

The other benefit to families is that you get a few options in your gallery so you get to choose what expressions best represent your child, and you only buy what you love. Parents love seeing their children as they truly are, especially in a timeless black and white photo, without busy backgrounds or awkward poses.

How does this work for schools?

Other than picture day, the process is entirely online. I handle all orders online, and all questions from parents about online ordering and products.

On picture day, I provide all necessary equipment. I just need a room with a large window or windows, as I use natural light to get my style of imagery. I just need a parent volunteer to help keep the kids looking their best (faces wiped and hair fixed) while they wait for their photos.

I spend 1-2 minutes with each child, in whatever order of classes makes sense for the school. I understand the importance of minimizing disruption to their class time, so I work hard to get the children back to the classroom as quickly as possible.

In addition to student photos, I take a photo of staff. Siblings are also welcome to have their portraits taken at the beginning of the day if the school would like to open up that option.

What is the ordering process like? Must we order prints ahead of time?

The ordering process is simple and secure. Within 2 weeks of picture day you will receive an email with a link to the galleries, information about how to find your child's portraits, and you will be able to choose which sizes of prints and digital files you'd like to purchase directly from the online gallery. You do not have to pre-select packages that don't have everything you want in them.

There will be 2-5 images of each child, depending on how expressive they are. Images will be in both color and black and white. I do not choose which photos you print; you do.

The gallery will be live for ordering seven (7) days. ALL ORDERS MUST BE PLACED IN THAT SEVEN DAY PERIOD.

Once all orders have been received, I will order your prints and deliver to the school for distribution.

Will there be a class photo?

I can create a composite of each class at the school's request so we save valuable classroom time and it's easier to see everyone's faces!

Can siblings join in?

This is up to each school to decide but I am available to do a fine art portrait of a younger sibling who may not yet attend school. Please ask your school administrator if sibling photos have been approved for your school.

What if My child misses picture day?

There will be a make-up day scheduled for any children that happen to be absent on picture day.

What if my child doesn't cooperate?

I work with lots and lots of families and kiddos and am pretty great at making them feel comfortable and relaxed enough to smile. Even when a child does not smile, I love to capture their serious side. I cannot guarantee they will all cooperate, but almost all do, and the good news is you do not have to pre-purchase any images. I will do my best to provide you with at the very least one to two beautiful images to choose from in your gallery.

Do we have to participate?

Not at all! If you would rather not have your child's school picture taken, please let their teacher know so I do not include them in the pictures. But since there is no obligation to purchase products in advance, I encourage each child to have their picture taken and you can decide later if you'd like the portrait or not.

What should my child wear?

Please avoid words/graphics and neon colors. Bright pink/orange/green are very difficult to work with as they cast colors on the skin. Simple, neutral colors and solids work best for fine art portraits, and remember, only their waist up will be in the picture! I also suggest avoiding large hair bows that can detract from the facial features and often cast colors onto the skin.

Will you work with our school's needs?

If your school has a special need or request, just let me know and I am happy to accommodate! I can provide a class composite image, a high resolution digital file of each child and staff member to use for yearbooks, websites, school advertising,  or however the school wishes to use them.  If your school needs school ID's I am happy to work with you on adding that service as well.
